Troubleshooting

When in doubt, here are some tips to help you:

1. Don't use Google Chrome (at least, at present it seems to be modifying the CSV files)
2. If both Membership.csv and Directory.csv are present, only Membership.csv will be used.
3. Disconnect your phone from the computer before you import (okay, it's possible to import with the computer connected, but it's easier to just say unplug it. When it doubt, unplug).

The user base for this app is really growing and some of you are becoming increasingly proficient. So, that said, am I missing anything? Post your tips in the comments.

  1. No workie. I received the Membership.csv from my Exec Sec (which he downloaded from MLS) and in fact already uploaded that file to my GMail Contacts. No problem with GMail contacts.

Membership.csv is in the Ward Roster folder on my SD card. When I fire up Ward Roster, I see the Import .csv file menu button, but when I push it, nothing happens.

Using the Astro file app, I can see the Membership.csv file and even open it. Nothing looks amiss. I'm using the Droid.

Any clues? You can e-mail me at john "at" higham "dot" com

  2. Two observations about using the Directory.csv method:

    1) Although a similar problem was reported fixed in v 0.1.1, at least in this mode (loaded from Directory.csv) there is still a problem loading names with spaces. "De La Rosa" fails.

    2) This mode still does not detect and display the email addresses contained in Directory.csv.

  3. Boomerbubba,

thanks for the heads up. Admittedly, I spend more time on the MLS import, since that's the one I use. I'll look into both of these issues.

  4. I am having the same problem as john. Import csv file into the ward roster folder on the sd card. when I try to import in the ward roster program, nothing happens. I have the droid. I did notice in the ward roster folder there are subfolders of "family" and "individual". Should I put the csv file into one of these?

  5. I found that if I rename Membership.csv to Directory.csv, I can get it to work. But some data is lost. For exmple, I know I have callings data in the Membership file, but it doesn't show up when I rename it Directory.

That could be a clue. It has been awhile since I was a clerk, but if I remember correctly, when you extract data from MLS, you can request different fields be exported.

Does Ward Roster require a specific format?

  6. I had membership.csv file in the wardroster folder on my sd card. When I start ward roster all I get is a black screen. I push menu and push import from csv, but nothing happens. I changed file name to directory.csv, still does not work. ???

  7. I've loaded the file and have a listing of names but when I click on a name to get their information I don't see an email address though it is in the file. I have phone number & addresses only...

  8. John,

If you have callings data in your file, then you have the wrong file. Membership.csv as exported from MLS contains no callings data whatsoever. Did you export some other file and rename it Membership.csv?

  9. I have a Motorola Droid and I am having issues with getting the csv file to load from the Online Directory.csv file.

    Here are my steps:

    Installed App.
Went to Church Site - Downloaded Ward Directory
Renamed file and stored on SD Card under the WardRoster folder.
    Started Wardroster App
    Hit Import from CSV.

No LOVE whatsoever. Just a black screen.

  10. William,

After copying the Directory.csv file to the SD card, did you remember to unmount the SD card from the computer before trying to run Ward Roster?

  11. Droid Users:

I have had the same issue with the black screen of....duh?

So my workaround is take the .csv file and re-save it as a .xls or .xlsx. Then I am using astro app to access my sd card and use the spreadsheet.

I prefer this to including my ward list with 450 additional contacts into my contact directory...this would make it harder to find my business and family contacts...instead it is an excel spreadsheet.

Till the love is here for our Droid this seems to be the best bet.

    Take care,

    Emery

  12. Yes indeed! I even took the SD card out mounted attached it directly to my computer, copied the file then unmounted from computer... put back in phone and tried. No love.

  13. Okay very weird... I decided for kicks and giggles to restart my phone and then try it. Voila! All is good now.

When in doubt... try a reboot. ;)

Shame on Google for practicing Microsoft's trade secrets.

  14. ok...so now I am more confused. I am supposed to take the card out of my phone...mount it in my card bay...which would require going and buying a mini-regular card adapter...Then unmount, reinstall card and reboot my handheld.

[Warning...dumb question to follow...] Doesnt taking out the card require a reboot since the battery must be removed to get out the card????

So you cannot do this with the mounting and unmounting procedure using the usb cable? Which was prob designed to keep us from having to pull the card every time something needs to be placed on the sd card.

Sorry for my ignorance. I am a recently converted from an ancient blackberry.

  15. N. Emery Layton, PE,

Sorry for the confusion. The answer is no you do not need to take it out. I tried that on once instance of trying to get it to work. The way I did get it to work is this:

Connect DROID to USB cable to my computer.
    Mount the SD card.
Then on computer, downloaded and copied the CSV file from Ward Directory from Church Website.
    Unmount the SD Card.
    Rebooted phone.
    Opened WardRoster
    Import CSV.

Lastly I smiled that it all worked.

Note: You DO NOT need to take out the SD card. That was me being a typical tech nerd trying to get it to work. :)

    Cheers.

  16. You shouldn't need to reboot your phone.

Make sure you unplug it from the computer though, and give the phone a second (okay, maybe several) to recognize the SD card before you click import.

  17. Our ward just updated to MLS 3.1 where they change the database format to support more phone numbers, etc. Tried to do the import with that and didn't work. Are you working on supporting the new format?
Previously the imports worked fine for me. One issue I've had is that I'm still only getting part of the address linked on the contacts tab.

    Thanks for the work.

    Craig.

  18. Craig,

Our Ward just updated to MLS 3.1 too. I checked the format before I tried importing, because I knew it was supposed to change. Unfortunately, I didn't know how or when it would change. Now that I have the new format, I'll get started on the update. I will probably need to make the app differentiate between the 2 formats, since I don't think everyone will get the 3.1 update at the same time, so that effort will take a bit of time. We'll see if I get time to do it over the holiday.

  19. okay, so I just got a replacement phone and I cannot find Ward Roster on the Android Marketplace at all.

  20. AAAGGGHHHH, Okay, I just got the droid, I downloaded the membership directory as directory.csv, plugged the phone in, mounted the card, copied the file, unplugged from the computer. But when telling Ward Roster to import from CSV ... I get NOTHING!!!!. I have tried rebooting the phone, even removed the SD card then plugged it back in, no luck!! ANyone have any thoughts??

  21. Any word on an up that supports MLS 3.1

  22. I have the same prob that mesaazcpa has. Not sure what your comment means Mike. Is this a hint on getting this to work on our Droid?

    Take care,

    Emery

  23. I am able to load the file saved as Directory.csv on the SD card, but I am having trouble with the contact address hyperlink. Only the latter part of the address is included in the hyperlink. An address of, say, "100 E 100 N #1, Nowhereville, UT" will only show up as "#1, Nowhereville, UT" in the Google Maps search string when you follow the link.

Anyone else having this problem? I am using the Droid.

  24. Mike,

MLS 3.1 caught me be surprise. I knew it was coming, but I didn't know what it would be like or when it would come. Ward Roster will support MLS 3.1 within the month (if not sooner).

  25. Our ward got the MLS 3.1.1 update last Sunday. This seemed to make some additional changes because I had to update my "Ward Tools" version before it would import the Visiting Teaching CSV file.

  26. I'm having all of the same issues as Droid users. I can mount or unmount, put the csv file in the general Directory, or into the "family" or "individual" subfolders, but I get a whole lot of black screen when I try to import - not even a notice telling me import wasn't possible.

Hope this gets fixed soon. I'd love to have all of this data at my fingertips!

  27. So I've been trying for 3 weeks to get this to work. My brother has something similar for Iphone and I really am excited to get your app. I am a Droid user. I used both IE8 and then Firefox to download the csv file from the lds.org website. I used Astro to find the file on my sd card and it is there, I have named and renamed the csv from Membership.csv to Directory.csv, I have unmounted, waited, and disconnected the usv prior to opening the app to upload. I have saved the file in WardRoster, Individual, Family, in both Membership.csv, and Directory.csv formats downloaded from both Firefox and IE8. I have changed cases of letters to all lowercase, all uppercase, first letter only in cap. I have done the dos copy so that I can get all of the wards on one csv. I have tried it all. I have rebooted, taken out my sd card, I have loaded the csv's directly to my sd card from my computer. But still every time I go into the app and select import csv, I get a blank screen. I think I have read all of the blog including all of the comments prior to posting and unfortunately still no WardRoster to my dismay. Any suggestions before I just give up?

  29. Hey...DROID USERS...got it to work.

    Here is what I did.

    1. Uninstalled the app from my phone.
    2. Powered off my phone
    3. Used a SD card adapter to plug SD card into computer to delete the "Ward Roster" folder.
    4. Remounted sd card, powered up phone.
    5. Reinstalled app from marketplace.
    6. Re downloaded ward roster .csv file from my online ward directory.
    7. Took care to NOT OPEN FILE...saved it as.
    8. Renamed by right click.
    9. Powered down phone, unmounted card and mounted to computer.
    10. Copy & paste directory.csv into "ward roster" folder...not other folders in the file.
    11. Unmounted card from computer, remounted and powered on phone.
    12. Went to app...started, selected "import" and the button stayed lit...began to get excited and ...wallah! Within 1 minute my ward roster was there!

I tried every other way prior to this with my usb cable and it did not work. I suspect something was asmiss here or perhaps when I opened the .csv file and renamed it previously. Dont know exactly which was the key but now I am happy...the links to MAP are great when trying to find a house...since I do a ton of visits as the EQP.

FYI. I am running, vista, office 07 and Firefox as my browser.

    Good luck.

    Emery

  31. It worked like a charm. Question though when you go to the ward website my ward already has all the photos loaded is there a way to quickly and easily down load these?

Not in this version, but will be coming in a future version.

  33. why has the correct sequence for droid users not been posted somewhere obvious so that we don't have to spend an hour scanning the comments sections? I was about to send my droid for a first class trip across the room.
