Droid Users - Read this

There have been some reports of frustration involved with getting the CSV file in the right spot and having the app recognize the file. The majority of the frustration seems to be coming from Droid users. One persistent user found a combination that worked for him and I thought I'd post it here. Props to Emery for figuring this out and taking the time to document it:

Hey...DROID USERS...got it to work.

Here is what I did.

1. Uninstalled the app from my phone.
2. Powered off my phone
3. Used a SD card adapter to plug SD card into computer to delete the "Ward Roster" folder.
4. Remounted sd card, powered up phone.
5. Reinstalled app from marketplace.
6. Re downloaded ward roster .csv file from my online ward directory.
7. Took care to NOT OPEN FILE...saved it as.
8. Renamed by right click.
9. Powered down phone, unmounted card and mounted to computer.
10. Copy & paste directory.csv into "ward roster" folder...not other folders in the file.
11. Unmounted card from computer, remounted and powered on phone.
12. Went to app...started, selected "import" and the button stayed lit...began to get excited and ...wallah! Within 1 minute my ward roster was there!

I tried every other way prior to this with my usb cable and it did not work. I suspect something was asmiss here or perhaps when I opened the .csv file and renamed it previously. Dont know exactly which was the key but now I am happy...the links to MAP are great when trying to find a house...since I do a ton of visits as the EQP.

FYI. I am running, vista, office 07 and Firefox as my browser.

  1. I tried this and no luck. I named it directory.csv is that what I should have used. This loading here there and back again is a little tough to follow. Is this the only way it will work on the droid? When I first downloaded it - I thought it asked if I wanted to get csv from church web site, but maybe not, it doesn't do that anymore. Any help would be appreciated.

    Renamed it what?

  3. Finally worked. Named file directory nothing else. Only about half the addresses work on map. Some are in well established part of town. Is is how they are entered on church site?

This is going to be a great help in finding people.

  4. I've tried several gyrations on this with no luck. I get the data in, but it's missing the phone number and the formatting is way off. I'm using an HTC Eris. I exported the file with no modifications from MLS, renamed it to "Directory" to ensure no extensions were messed up but still no luck on getting it formatted correctly. What are the column headings it's looking for in the import?

  5. tnesai1967: If you are exporting the file from MLS, you should name the file Membership.csv. If you are pulling the file from lds.org, name the file Directory.csv.

  6. Thanks Alan, I did this, now I get a parsing error "unable to parse '' as integer" message. It's trying to read it in. I didn't modify the file at all.

  7. Make sure you are using a current version of the app as well as a current version of export. MLS was recently updated to 3.1.1 and the file format was changed. So you need to have a recent version of the export file.

    The file header should look like this: "Indiv ID","Full Name","Preferred Name","MRN","HofH ID","HH Position","HH Order","Household Phone","Individual Phone","Household E-mail","Individual E-mail","Street 1","Street 2","D/P","City","Postal","State/Prov","Country","2-Street 1","2-Street 2","2-D/P","2-City","2-Zip","2-State/Prov","2-Country","Ward Geo Code","Stake Geo Code","Sex","Birth","Baptized","Confirmed","Endowed","Rec Exp","Priesthood","Mission","Married","Spouse Member","Sealed to Spouse","Sealed to Prior",

  8. Hey guys, FYI:

I didn't follow any of the steps above for my Droid. I did the following:

    1. Install Motorola Media Link on my PC (and set up a profile for my phone, etc...)
    2. Installed Ward Roster app on my phone
    3. Downloaded the directory from my ward website and saved it to my desktop
    4. Mounted SD card
    5. Renamed directory file on my desktop to "directory" (no extensions or anything)
    6. Copied and pasted it into WardRoster folder using Windows explorer
    7. Went back to Motorola Media Link program and used it to sync my phone and PC
8 Unmounted SD card and imported directory in the Ward Roster app
    9. Rinse and repeat for new members :)

  9. i've sync'd mine and my wife's and neither time did i have to remove SD card and physically insert into computer slot. just do as ryan above stated.

  10. What I realized I was doing was exporting a custom family list and trying to use it. I realized I had to take the default Membership export. Once I did this it imported without an issue.

I did notice however, that the camera and file option for pictures was not working (HTC Eris).

  11. Thank you so much for all the suggestions. All I had to do was save the ward list as "directory.csv" and i was able to transfer it using my usb cable. It took a few tries but after renaming to "directory.csv" it worked so easy.

  12. Best App! I have the droid and had no problem getting it to work. Just renamed file to "Directory.csv" and dragged and dropped it into the Ward Roster folder on my droid. Took about 30 sec. to load. Love the map feature and direct dialing. I do have one suggestion that would make this app even more amazing! Allow the option to see all members houses on the map at the same time. Then you would be able to zoom to a street or a neighborhood and see all members that live on that street. Would definitely donate for that. Thanks again.

  13. I finally got it to work on my droid, but it only shows a blank field under "Overview" and hyperlinks to address and phone number under "details." Based on what others have said, I'm clearly missing out on the greater functionality of this app.

So what am I missing? I've done all of the correct steps when it comes to renaming the file as "Directory" (no need for .csv since my computer doesn't list extension types), putting it in the general "Ward Directory" folder and not the subfolders therein.

I'd love to have this thing fully working, and while I'm glad that other Droid users are finally having success, I would like to be a par to the cool club. :)

  14. Geoff,

The blank field you are referring to, I assume that is the photo? Long press the photo area to get options as to setting the image.

Other than that, what do you think you are missing out on?

If you want the full benefit of the app, you need to obtain your data files from one of the Ward Clerks. This will enable full details on each member as well as Home Teaching, callings etc.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hey Alan,

If I press the blank area (it actually has a very thin X stemming from the corners of the field), I get the options "Acquire from Camera" and "Locate imagine." I'm not sure if photos are supposed to be bundled with the .csv (or perhaps my ward just doesn't have them attached), but I don't really have any other options with this. I think I figured more info was supposed to be on this screen, not just a photo and the first name of the individual beneath it.

I've turned on "Instant Dial" and "Show Family Photos," but I'm not sure what those should be doing.

Under the "Contact" tab, it shows a hyperlinked address. I know if I press that, it'll show it in Google Maps. Perhaps I just assumed the mapping function was some deal that showed the whole ward on one map? I might have just been mistaken.

Not sure if I'm missing anything with direct dial.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Geoff,

The photos aren't automatic. They don't come down in the CSV file. A future version might help you out there.

By default, when you click on a phone number, that phone number will open in the dialer, then you have to press dial. Instant Dial is a feature that you only have to click the phone number and it will dial without having to click again.

Some people don't use the app for Photos, so unmarking Show Family Photos should not show a photo box on any of the Family pages.

Right now the map only shows one address at a time, but enough people have requested a ward map that I will probably include that in a future version.

  17. I agree with the Ward map feature.

  18. I am a droid user and am wondering if I should be able to make the home/visiting teaching .csv files to work? Do I need to rename them something different? Any help would be appreciated.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Tyler,

Visiting Teaching is currently not available, but you should be able to drop your hometeaching.csv file along with your membership.csv file into WardRoster folder and they should work. Don't change anything as it comes out of MLS, just take the files as they come.

Note: you must use the files from MLS. You cannot combine a HomeTeaching.csv file with a Direcotry.csv file from the web.

  20. Yup, that process listed at the top of this page works just fine I tried lots of other ways that did not work that one listed above does work and the program works great! Thanks bunches.

  21. hey guys, this is great!!!! I am a bishop, and with this app I can be in top of every thing. Thanks a million. Only one question, how do I update or edit the information? do I have to update the MLS and then get the file again and put it in my droid? Thank you again.

    ReplyDelete
  22. i got it to work with the help of this blog, thx. one question -- some of the addresses are hyperlinked, others aren't. any ideas?

    ReplyDelete
  23. One thing to keep in mind is that (on the Droid at least) the import will not work as long as the SD card is mounted and connected to the computer. Once the SD card is unmounted, go into the app and try the import again.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I have been able to get this to work successfully for my Droid by using the mount feature from connecting the droid directly to your computer and downloading the directory from the ward website.

    1. installed the Ward Roster app from the Android Market (search "LDS" for quick find)
    2. Pluged in my phone to my computer using the supplied USB power chord
    3. Slide down the Notifications and select USB Connected option, then select "Mount"
    4. Download and Paste the attached Directory.csv file into "Ward Roster" folder of the E:\ drive (Droid SD Card) - No need to open the file first and do not put it in family or individual folders inside the Ward Roster folder
    5. Unmounted phone from computer by selecting the Notifications Menu, Turn Off USB Storage option and click "Turn Off"
    6. Started app... it starts with a message looking for the Directory.csv, you can select "import" but my button stayed lit and moments my ward roster was there!

FYI: The addresses with an apartment number do not hyperlink the entire address, they only hyperlink the apt number and the city, state, zip. This causes the Google search to go searching for relevant results instead of finding the address.
I can email the dir file if you want to troubleshoot this.

  25. Sorry, step 4 above should read: downloaded CSV from ward website and saved it in the SD Card Ward Directory folder.

  26. Hi, Using the Samsung Moment I was having some trouble but finally, after fiddling around for awhile, managed to get it figured out. Turns out I did the same thing, with a small variation, that the previous poster, Kimball, did. The only thing I did differently was to download the file from the ward web site directly onto my desktop/laptop. I renamed it Directory.csv then, after mounting my SD card I copied (or moved) the file to the WardRoster directory on the SD. I then unmounted the card from the computer and launched the Ward Roster app. For the first time it didn't tell me that a .csv file was not found, but there was 10 or 15 seconds of nothing happening. A then viola! Ward Roster. Looks good too. Thanks.

  27. I'm using the Droid Eris, and whenever I install WardRoster, it doesn't place any folders on my SD card... When I add the folders manually, it doesn't recognize them. Any suggestions? I have uninstalled and reinstalled a couple of times, with shutdowns between.

Also, can anyone give specific instructions on what do do in MLS to get the csv files exported. I have the privileges, but don't know how to use them! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Josh:

Did you attempt an import? That's when the folders are created.

To get the data files, open MLS, choose File, Export, enter your password, select a location, and check the first 4 boxes on the export screen.

  29. I've followed all of the advice given. But I still get the message, no CSV file found. I have installed the app, downloaded the MLS file from the ward website, renamed it Directory.csv, placed in in the mail directory, stopped the USB application then unmounted the SD card, rebooted several times.. always the same error message.. no CSV file found. Suggestions? I've got version 1.5 OS (cupcake) on an HTC ERIS droid.

  30. So I got it to work simply by plugging the cable into my computer, mounting the drive, copied the directory.csv into the WardRoster folder. Unmounted drive (disconnected cable after) then killed the AP with the free Advanced Task killer App. then restarted the program and imported perfectly.

  31. I have a G1 and I had difficulty initially, however after the following steps it worked just fine.

    Open Ward roster
    Download the ward roster csv
Copy the CSV to the directory WardRoster/ (note I also had a family/ and individual/ directory
Rename to 'Directory.csv' (I had extensions displayed on my windows machine so I know it wasn't renaming my file to 'Directory.csv.csv')
    Disconnect from Computer!
    Click Menu
Select Import from CSV - Be Patient.. it takes almost a full minute to process.

    Wala!

Thanks hopefully this will be useful.

  32. I am our Bishop's First Counselor and while doing temple recommends, it is nice to have some data of the member handy (membership record number.) I used to use Ward Tools, but they are too far behind in their development of ward data for the droid. Do you have a release for all the member data for admin users to have downloaded to the Droid?

Other features I bet you might/hope you're working on is being able to utilize the set reports from MLS and custom reports? ...or Individual member summary info (baptism date, sealing date, membership record number...)?

Thank you so much for being charitable with sharing your knowledge about programming so the rest of us may be more organized before the Lord.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Jeremiah,

MLS integration is actually where this app started. :) The information you are looking for is available in the current release. If you take the Membership.csv, Organization.csv, and HomeTeaching.csv files from MLS and place them in the WardRoster folder, you should be able to import and get all the info you are wanting (baptism date, sealing date, membership number, etc).

As far as reports, that's something I need to work on.

  34. Awesome job. This has been an answer to my prayers. I was in a bishopric with an original palm and now with the HTC Incredible this will allow me to focus on people and not the massive binder with all of the info that I need to be a success.

  35. I'm on a HTC Incredible and keep getting this message when attempting to import the data files:
    Sorry!
The application Ward Tools (process org.wardtools) has stopped unexpectedly. Please Try again [Force close]

    ReplyDelete
  36. I was able to upload the files successfully:
    1. I downloaded the app onto my phone's SD card
    2. From my computer I downloaded the csv file from lds.org
    3. I renamed the file to directory.csv
    4. I moved the csv card from my phone to my computer
    5. I moved directory.csv file from my computer to the SD card in the WardDirectory folder
    6. I moved the SD card from my computer to my phone and opened my app!

    I have an HTC Incredible.

The hot links of the addresses to Google maps is fabulous! The hot links of the telephone numbers for numbers in a different area code is fabulous. The hot links of the telephone number for number in my same area code doesn't work :-(

  40. Hey, just thought I would let you know that I uninstalled the app on my droid, downloaded the csv file to my desktop, renamed it directory then opened up my droid sd card and placed it on the card itself, not in any folder, turned off the usb connection, then re-downloaded the app, reconnected the usb and moved the file to the ward roster file, opened up the app and it automatically loaded. The only thing I don't have is email addresses :(

    ReplyDelete
  41. Is this app still being supported? I haven't seen any new features, updates, or blog postings in almost a year.

    ReplyDelete
  42. ASUDave: Sorry for the lack of support. I got called as bishop and that affects my free time. I have a few features that I'd like to add, but it might take me some time to get them in.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Just an FYI, it looks as if the new format from .csv files downloaded from the new.lds.org website are different. I went to update my directory with a new .csv from the new Church website and the information presented in the app is almost unusable.

The base roster only shows last names, so if there are multiple families with the same last name you don't know which one you are selecting.

Nothing is shown in the Overview, the heads of house are shown on the Contact tab and it does show their address, but phone numbers are not shown.
